Presentation Description
Machine Learning: Big Data Ate My Video

"How is anyone ever going to find my video after it rolls off of the front page of results?" Often the biggest challenge is recognizing and solving the problem that search engines operate on text not video.

The most common use of machine learning/big data learning by Media Centers has been in generating text captions from video.

This workshop will explore options for how Media Centers can go beyond the basics of captioning by using captions for metadata enhancement, generating captions in languages other than English, and the implications for your workflow.

Presentation Description
"My Big Idea"

Panelists will present their "One Big Idea" that they think has the potential for the most impactful change in the relationship of Media Centers to their Communities

John's "Big Idea" is offline distribution of online resources; a partnership with the local Public Library to distribute Access Humboldt video to library patrons via the use of combined USB Thumbdrives/Wireless hotspot devices. Access Humboldt is responsible for loading the video on the devices and the library handles distribution of the devices through their existing circulation system. This extends the reach of the Access Center into the community of un-served and under-served members of the community that don't have access to high speed broadband. This is an twist on the larger "Offline Educational Resources" movement that has developed around the world attempting to bridge the divide between digital "haves" and "have nots".
